Is Video Game Addiction for Real?

I saw this article on video game addiction today and thought that I would elicit your thoughts about whether video game addiction is real.  I don’t know what to think.  I actually do think that it is real and can be a real problem.  However, video game addiction is no different than any other activity that someone becomes obsessed with.  Here is an excerpt from the article.

The boy stares at the glowing screen as he concentrates. Nothing else seems to matter, and he isn’t aware of what’s going on around him.

He’s not working on an important paper for school or reading an interesting story on the Internet. No, this boy is lost in a video game, and as he gets more involved with the game, he starts to shun the company of friends and family. He spends more and more time playing the game and less and less time out in the real world.

Sound like this boy might be addicted to video games? The American Medical Association isn’t so sure, but it is becoming apparent that video games can be a problem for children and adults.

The article also states that,

90 percent of young Americans play video games, and it estimated up to 15 percent of them might be addicted.

I bet that roughly 15 percent of any group of people that enjoy an activity could be considered addicted to that activity.  So why is the media so concerned about video game addiction?  I believe that the reason is that the media generally see video games as negative.  What do you think?  Is video game addiction real?  Is it a real problem?

New Warhammer MMO Gameplay Video

As I was surfing YouTube, I came across a Warhammer MMO video that I had never seen before. I can’t tell if it is new, but I thought that you would enjoy it. It sure does look like the gameplay is fast paced. I am not sure if that is good or bad. What do you think?

Best EQ2 Maps Resources

In this post I would like to highlight some of the best online resources for EQ2 maps. Whenever I start a new mmorpg, maps are some of the first things that I look for. This is also true for Everquest 2.

EQ2 Maps:

The best EQ2 maps resource is EQ2 Maps. EQ2 Maps is an interface module that you can download and access in the Everquest 2 game. Whenever you hit “m” while in game, EQ2 Maps replaces the standard in-game map with a much more detailed maps. The EQ2 Maps do an awesome job at showing you where mobs are located, including named mobs, quest locations, zone points, and points of interest.

GamePressure’s Everquest 2 Maps and Quests:

My second favorite resource for EQ2 maps is Gamepressure’s Everquest 2 Maps and Quests. This website provides unbelievable maps for every zone in the game and is very helpful for questing. These EQ2 maps show the points of interest, available quest locations, and NPCs found in the zone.

Game Amp’s EQ2 Maps:

While not as good as EQ2 Maps or Game Pressure, Game Amps does have a pretty thorough catalog of EQ2 maps. These maps are not as detailed as the EQ2 maps mentioned above, but if you can’t find something you are looking for, I thought that I should list them.

New Free Online RPGs

Two previously released mmorpgs became free online rpgs this week, Archlord and Sword of the New World. I have had no interest in playing Archlord, but I have wanted to check out Sword of the New World. Sword of the New World has been free to download and free to play up to level 20. I find it fascinating that more and more mmorpgs are becoming free online rpgs.
